The Frustrated Optimist

Bio Poem: The Frustrated Optimist

I am a frustrated optimist.
I wonder if I can make the world a better place.
I hear voices in my head telling me I can do it – I can! – but
I see students’ dubious expressions at my words.
I want to show them the pathways to success, but
I am a frustrated optimist.

I pretend that I know the answers to their questions, and
I feel as if my positive outlook might carry over. And I know
I touch upon the truth at times – I must, right? – but ultimately
I worry about every word I say, every gesture I make, and
I cry to think of the times my best efforts have fallen flat.
I am a frustrated optimist.

I understand that attitude really matters, and
I say that you have to BE the change you want to SEE.
I dream of better tomorrows to drown out bleak todays;
I try to keep my head up and a smile on my face, and
I hope – I really hope – that my positivity will be returned. Nevertheless,
I am a frustrated optimist.
